Colonial Day

Fifth grade students were treated to a program from Mercer Museum through a grant from the Bucks County Foundation. Please read some excerpts from student letters to see how much they learned from this wonderful morning. Scroll through the photos and click on thumbnails to enlarge the photos.

Today I learned a lot about the colonel times and I want to share some of the things I haved learned. When I was at the candle station I learned that the people had fireplaces so big that they could put a chair in the fireplace and sit there! The people used the candles they made to heat food, read, and to be warm.

I learned today that the women would wear this cloth around their neck because other people were not allowed to see that person’s neck. I also learned that you would make your bed out of your cow's leftover hay; they did that because they did not want to waste things by throwing it away. They would have to wear this little cap on their head so any dead bugs would not get in their hair.

I really enjoyed everything we did today. I had fun learning more about that time period and how people lived. My favorite part was when we got to write with the feather pen. I was not really that good at writing in fractor though.

My favorite part was when we got to work with wood. I really enjoyed making the pegs. I also wanted to know what it would feel like to sleep on a bed made out of straw. I learned that some houses had no windows. Also I learned that the people wore their nightgowns under their clothes.

I learned about the lighting they used in the old days. I learned that the fire place played an important role. It lighted the homes, gave warmth, and cooked food. They also showed us how to light a fire back then. Something else they showed us was how to make pegs, holes with a drill and wood shaving. We made a peg by taking a hammer and hitting it until it split through a small hole.

My favorite part was trying to write with the feather. That was fun! I learned back in colonial times it was hard to live like they lived. And it is not easy to write with a feather. Also learning about what they wore then was interesting because our clothes today are so different, and they are made different too.

I learned walking on stilts isn’t easy.

I had a great time today with the colonial people that came to our school. They showed us wood work and other cool things like that. They showed how they dressed and some games that they played. I learned that they had to make most of the stuff that they used. Buckets were made out of wood and their beds were made out of straw. They did not have electricity and they had to use candles for light. They had better candle holders than others. If there was a problem outside during the night, they had to go out and see what was wrong out there. I also learned that they used pegs to put stuff together: houses, buildings, churches. Also they used fire to light their houses and for heat. They sat by their fire and sewed and stitched.
