“To The Moon and Back”

The members of the Oliver Heckman Elementary School wellness clubs Wheelers Club and Striders Club have reached their goal of traveling 477,714 miles, the equivalent of a trip to the moon and back.  Since 1988 when physical education teacher Mr. Richard formed the clubs

Grafius, the 1250 past and present members have kept records of how many miles they traveled by walking, running, bicycling, skating and scootering during physical exercise activities. The present clubs consist of students (200+), parents (100+) and school staff (30+). These members do most of their miles outside of school but students can also participate in a recess-walking program. Students record their own and their parents’ miles each week during their physical education class. For every 25 miles they receive a

small plastic bead shaped like a foot and a certificate for each 100 miles.

The physical education department at Oliver Heckman Elementary School congratulates participants in this program for their continued efforts towards maintaining their health and wellness through participation in this worthwhile program.

Students may join the clubs during their regularly schedule gym class.
